Your in the CoPilot seat with Demon
26
We are three miles north of Tuy Hoa Air Force Base
and have been cleared to over fly in formation
The sound of rotor
blades slapping the air is deafening. Gee, we do enjoy disturbing the Air Force
types! No wonder they have taken our picture in a "V" formation of nine UH1's to
use for a test pattern on Armed Forces Vietnam Television. We're impressive, and
we know it! We're on our way to Phu Hiep Army Airfield, better known as "Hell's
Half Acre". After all we are the 134th AHC, the Demons and Devils. If you want
to calls us, just ask for Lucifer Switch. Oh yah, almost forgot we've got a
little flying to do.
Devils on the right of me,Demons on my left
As we descend the formation closes up, and the photos get clearer.
Down below the jet jockeys are running for cover.
This is where they keep their bombs, boy would I like to
get hold of a couple of those!
We're coming up on Phu Hiep. I am told that 1Lt Lee Hilty,
Detachment Commander of the 821st Signal Detachment and his men arrived at Tuy
Hoa AFB in April 1967 and built this airfield and their compound in just 30
days. All of us that worked there thank them for a job well done.
Can you see the runway on the left, and the revetments on
the right?
I'll climb just a bit to give you a better view.
"Light My Fire" one of my favorite aircraft.
